Sunshine Flower Cantaloupe Carving

Material

  • One cantaloupe

Equipment

  • Sharp-pointed knife
  • Carving knife

Instructions

  • Slice through one side of the cantaloupe to form a flat base so that it will stand on its side.
  • Form the center of the flower by cutting a circle. Remove the flesh from around the outside of the circle. Carve the flesh inside into pointed petals.
  • Lay out 12 petals radiating from the center. With the carving knife, make pointed petals that curve in one direction.
  • Within each petal, make two grooves parallel to the edges so that it appears there is a smaller petal above a larger one. Remove a little flesh from beneath the edges of the petals. Make the second and third circles of petals in the same way.
  • Carve a circle of leaves beyond the petals. Remove the flesh from around the leaves, and cut grooves in their surfaces to represent ribs and veins and notch their edges.
  • Cut grooves in the remaining surface as the picture.

Dahlia Cantaloupe Carving

Material

  • One cantaloupe

Equipment

  • Sharp-pointed knife
  • Carving knife

Instructions

  • Make a cut through one end of the cantaloupe so that it will stand at an angle of about 45 degrees.
  • Peel the part of the cantaloupe to be carved.
  • Lay out five petals. Cut a groove at the middle of each. Notch both border with the tip of the carving knife. Remove the flesh from beneath the petal so it stands out.
  • Make the second circle of petals in the same way, centering them between those of the first circle.
  • Continue making successive circles of petals until half the cantaloupe is carved.

Cantaloupe Flower Carving

Material

  • One cantaloupe

  • Sharp-pointed knife
  • Carving knife

Instructions

  • Make a cut through one side of the cantaloupe so as to form a flat base on which the cantaloupe will stand.
  • To form the bud at the center of the flower, make a circular cut with the tip of the knife. Remove the flesh from around the outside of the cut. Form the petals by making curved cuts. Remove some flesh from beneath the petals to make them stand out. Make successive layers of petals in the same way.
  • Lay out five expanded petals radiating from the center. Slice away flesh to form undulations in the surface of each petal. Form the pointed tips of the petals with the carving knife. Remove some flesh from beneath the petals to give them definition.
  • The second flower is partially covered by the first and is made in the same way.
  • Carve the leaves so they radiate out from in between the petals. With the tip of the carving knife, cut shallow veins on either side of the leaves and grooves to represent the midribs. Remove the flesh from around the leaves.
  • Cut V-shaped grooves in the entire surface surrounding the leaves.

Stylized Lotus Cantaloupe Carving

Material

  • One small cantaloupe which is not yet ripe

Equipment

  • Sharp-pointed knife
  • Carving knife
  • Melon scoop

Instructions

  • Make a shallow slice to cut off the stem end.
  • Make cuts down the side of the melon to divide it into 12 uniform sections. Cut under these sections to make the outer ring of 12 petals. These should be about one quarter of a centimeter thick.
  • Divide the melon into 12 sections centered between the petals of the outer ring to make a second and then a third ring of petals. Next, remove the seeds mid membrane at the center.
  • Notch the borders of the petals attractively, starting with the middle ring and then moving to the inner ring.
  • Notch the borders of the petals of the outer ring more deeply and cut a shallow groove in each.

Star Flowers Yam Bean Tuber Carving

Material

  • Two medium-sized yam bean tubers

Equipment

  • Sharp pointed knife
  • Carving knife

Instructions

  • Peel and wash the tubers and slice them in half lengthwise.
  • To form the bud in the center of the flower, make a small circular cut and remove the flesh from around the outside. Carve five petals and remove flesh from the inner side so they stand out.
  • With the tip of the carving knife, make cuts to form five pointed petals radiating from the center. Remove flesh from under the petals to give them definition. Make three radial grooves in the surface of each petal.
  • The petals of the second circle are centered between those of the first. When the flower is completed, remove any remaining flesh.

Orchids Yam Bean Tuber Carving

Material

  • Two large yam bean tubers

Equipment

  • Sharp-pointed knife
  • Carving knife

Instructions

  • Cut the tubers in half from top to bottom.
  • Cut into the center of the flat side with the carving knife and then make a circular cut around the cen¬ter. While cutting, twist the wrist up and down slightly to give the center of the flower a wavy surface.
  • Carve the two large petals on opposite sides of the center, again twisting the wrist slightly to give them a wavy surface. Remove the flesh to the sides of the petals.
  • In the same way, carve the two small petals between the large ones.
  • Remove the flesh from beneath the petals and you will have a white orchid. Use a paintbrush to daub the center of the flower at¬tractively with yellow food coloring.

Papaya Leaf Carving

Material:

  • One nearly-ripe papaya

Equipments

  • Carving knife
  • Sharp -pointed knife

Directions

  • Without peeling it cut the papaya, lengthwise into slices and remove the seeds.
  • Cut each slice into parallelogram-shaped pieces.
  • Remove the skin, giving a curved shape.
  • Trim the sides to the shape of a leaf.
  • With the tip of the knife, cut two curving grooves, tapering at each end, in the face of each leaf.

Jujube Water Lilies Carving

Material:

  • Three jujubes

  • Sharp-pointed knife

Directions

  • Wash the jujubes. Slice away the stem end of each, and set it aside. Make eight shallow cuts in the fruit at equal intervals around the circumference.
  • Make a cut around the fruit parallel to the skin and about a quarter of a centimeter beneath it. Trim the tips so they look like pointed petals.
  • Remove some flesh from the inner face, make eight shallow cuts centered between the petals of the outer circle, make a cut around and below the circumference, and trim to form the eight inner petals. Remove the flesh from the center.
  • Invert the stem end of the fruit, carve grooves on it in a crisscross pattern, and insert in the center of the flower.

Guava Covered Bowl Carving

Guava Covered Bowl Carving

Material:

  • Two Sali guavas

Equipments

  • Carving knife
  • Melon scoop

Directions

  • With the tip of the carving knife, lay out a five pointed star around the stem of the guava, and then deepen the cuts so that the guava separates in two, thus forming the bowl and the cover.
  • With the melon scoop, hollow out the inside of the bowl, and then wash it well.
  • Begin carving the outer surface of the bowl. Make a cut parallel to the edges of the mouth all the way around the fruit and then re¬move a little flesh from the cut to make a groove. With the carving knife, make a V-shaped groove in each of the five protrusions. Insert the tip of the carving knife into the flesh toward the base end of the groove, make a cut to form the edge of the leaf, twisting the wrist to make the edge wavy. Make the other edge of the leaf in the same way. Remove some flesh from be¬neath the edges and cut grooves to form the veins of the leaf as in the picture.
  • in the same way, make another leaf surrounding the first but without cutting grooves for veins. Make leaves on the other four protrusions and then cut V-shaped grooves in the surface of the fruit around the leaves.
  • On the cover, make a cut around the edge and remove a little flesh to make a groove. Next carve a pattern of five leaves. Make long narrow cuts to form leaf veins and then surround these with zigzag cuts to form the edges of the leaves.

Carved Apple Carving

Apple Carving

Material:

  • Two red apples

Equipments

  • Sharp-pointed knife
  • Carving knife

Directions

  • Wash the apples.
  • Begin carving the first flower by creating the center. Make cuts to form the petals and remove flesh from the cuts.
  • With the tip of the knife, cut curved expanded petals around the center and remove flesh from beneath to make them stand out.
  • Around and centered between these carve a circle of pointed petals.
  • To one side and below, carve a second flower in the same way. Then, carve a third to one side and above the second. Continue in this way around the fruit. When done, carve leaves around the flowers.
  • Peel the areas that are not carved and then soak the apple in salt water to prevent from darkening.
