How to make Black Spice or Goda Masala

Goda Masala is also known as black Spice. Traditionally used is Maharashtrian cuisine. The word “goda” means sweet. The fragile sweetness arises from coconut.


  • Marathi goda masala recipeCoriander seeds 2 cups
  • Dry coconut 1/2 cup
  • White sesame seeds 1/4 cup
  • Black sesame seeds 1/4 cup
  • Cumin seeds 2 tbsp
  • Black cumin seeds 3 tsp
  • Asafoetida (heeng)1 tsp
  • Cinnamon 2 sticks
  • Cloves 2
  • Black cardamom 1 (seeds only)
  • Dry red chilies 2
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil 1 Tbsp

How to make Black Spice

  1. Roast all of the ingredients except coriander and coconut seeds in oil until aroma arise. Put aside.
  2. Roast coriander and coconut seeds separately without oil.
  3. Now grind each one of these ingredients together.
  4. Allow it cool and store Goda Masala or Black Spice in an air tight jar.
